Canton's City of Lights in 2026: Planning Your Festival Nights From Oakfield

The Canton Christmas Festival on the Historic Canton Square technically opens over Thanksgiving weekend. But the official 2026 schedule is two blocks of nights with a closure between them, and the second block is almost seven times as long as the first.

Visit Canton, run by the Canton Convention and Visitors Bureau, lists opening weekend as November 27–29, 2026. The festival reopens December 4 and runs through December 23, 2026, from 5 to 9 p.m. daily. That's 3 nights over the holiday weekend and 20 in December. For anyone living in Oakfield, most of the season happens after the Thanksgiving leftovers are gone.

A two-part calendar with a planned gap

Here's how the 2026 dates fall on the calendar. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, so opening weekend runs Friday through Sunday right after it.

Stretch 2026 dates Days of the week Nights open
Opening weekend Nov. 27–29 Friday to Sunday 3
Dark Nov. 30–Dec. 3 Monday to Thursday 0
Main run Dec. 4–23 Friday, Dec. 4 to Wednesday, Dec. 23 20

All open nights run 5 to 9 p.m.

This isn't a one-off quirk. In 2025, Canton Tourism's schedule had the same shape: open November 28–30, closed December 1–4, then open again December 5–23 with the same 5 to 9 p.m. hours. In 2026, opening weekend and the reopening each come one day earlier, and the closing date stays December 23. The reopening now lands on a Friday, and the December run covers three full weekends: December 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20. The other 11 December nights are weeknights, ending Wednesday, December 23.

In 2025, the town's Christmas parade fell inside the dark stretch. The Madison County Journal reported that the City of Canton Parks and Recreation Department scheduled the 2025 parade for December 4 at 6 p.m. with a "Magical Disney Christmas" theme. That was the last night the festival was closed that year. No 2026 parade date has been announced yet, and December 4 is an open festival night this year, so last year's date doesn't tell us much about this year's.

What last December's main run looked like

Canton hasn't named anything new for 2026. The official festival page promises thousands of lights on the square, carriage rides, Santa, Disney character entertainment, food trucks and Santa's Cookie Stop. For more detail than that, the best guide is last year's festival, which The Canton News covered in detail on December 1, 2025.

The 2025 square included:

  • Rudolph's Playground, fire truck and train rides, and the 3-story Christmas tree
  • An 18-foot walk-through gift box, a 32-foot caterpillar walk-through and a 16-foot walk-through snowman at 184 East Center Street, which was new in 2025
  • Mrs. Claus telling stories in an upgraded new spot
  • The Christmas Interactive Village, with the Reindeer Barn, Frosty's House and Rudolph's House, plus Santa's Snow Village
  • An old-fashioned carousel, antique cars, the Sky Race, and the Christmas Animation Museum and I Spy
  • America 250 patriotic displays around the square

Timing matters for families who have a specific stop in mind. In 2025, several featured events didn't run every open night. The Canton News reported that the Singalong Fest with the Best and Photos with Santa at 137 West Peace Street ran December 5–7, then December 12–23. Horse-drawn carriage rides ran Friday and Saturday, December 5 and 6, then nightly December 12–23. So in 2025, Santa photos and carriage rides skipped the weeknights of December 8–11 even though the lights were on. If 2026 follows the same pattern, a Santa visit or carriage ride needs its own date check, separate from just seeing the lights.

The 2025 season also had two special evenings in the main run. Canton Tourism listed Plein Air: Paint the Town Mississippi on December 6 and the 19th Annual Holiday Sip 'N Cider on December 12. At the Sip 'N Cider, which ran 5 to 9 p.m., participating merchants served warm cider and hosted competitions. Neither event has a 2026 date yet.

Plan in tickets, since 2026 prices aren't out

On cost, the official page says only that many areas downtown are free and that some attractions may need tickets or entry fees. Updated pricing comes out before each season. As of mid-October 2026, Canton hasn't posted it.

The 2025 system is still a useful baseline. That year, The Canton News reported individual tickets at $2 each or a sheet of 25 for $25, with each attraction priced in tickets:

Attraction, 2025 Tickets per person
Fire truck, carousel, Sky Race, antique cars 2
Wagon train 3
Horse-drawn carriage ride, Christmas Village 5

Under those 2025 rates, one carriage ride and the Christmas Village came to 10 tickets per person, or $20 at the single-ticket price. The 25-ticket sheet worked out to $1 a ticket. That saving adds up for a family making more than one trip, as long as everyone uses the tickets they bought. In 2025, the booths took only cash or major credit cards, and all sales were final. Think of these numbers as last year's rates for comparison. The 2026 rates could be different.

The square outside festival hours

The lights come on at 5 p.m., but the square's shops and restaurants keep their own hours. Canton Tourism's late-summer guide, published August 31, 2026, names the places a daytime visit would cover. On the square, there's The Emporium, a 3,600-square-foot "retro department store" with antiques, costume jewelry and local artisan work, and Merri Pennie's Mercantile for gifts and local finds. For a meal, the same guide points to Two Rivers Restaurant for an upscale dinner, Marlo's Backyard BBQ for slow-smoked barbecue, The Cooking Diva for Southern staples, and The Daily Scoop Ice Cream Shop for dessert.

One addition may or may not be ready by December. The Canton News reported on July 3, 2026 that Canton Coffee Station was getting ready to open in the city's former fire station on the square, with renovations underway. We haven't found a confirmed opening date, so check it before planning a hot-coffee stop around it.

The merchants hold their own holiday weekend too. The Canton News describes the Merchants' Open House as a weekend of gift and antique shopping around the Historic Square, open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday. In 2025, it fell on the festival's opening weekend, November 28–30. No 2026 Open House dates have been posted. If it lines up with opening weekend again, November 27–29 would be the one weekend this year when daytime shopping and the evening lights share a schedule.

Still unannounced as of mid-October

Here's what's still missing from the 2026 picture:

  1. Ticket prices and the attraction ticket chart
  2. Any new walk-throughs, rides or displays
  3. The Canton Christmas parade date and theme
  4. Merchants' Open House dates
  5. Holiday Sip 'N Cider and Plein Air dates
  6. Parking or shuttle arrangements for festival nights

The official festival page points visitors to Canton Tourism on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates. Until those details come out, three dates are firm: opening weekend November 27–29, the main run December 4–23, and 5 to 9 p.m. every open night.
